International Advanced Research Centre For Powder Metallurgy and New Material, Hyderabad

This year was a year of Technology transfer. The Centre has made a beginning by transferring over six Technologies in its prime areas of functioning. The centre is focussing on developing a strong technology base and is systematically working towards becoming technologically self-sufficient in the areas of Powder Metallurgy, ceramics and surface engineering

The Technical Highlights of the centre this year are enumerated below:

Heat Pipe based Heat Sinks

In collaboration with Luikov Institute of Heat and Mass transfer and PMRI, Belarus. ARCI has established and transferred the technology for production of heat pipes of 80W and 220W capacity under natural convection to M/s. Asian Electronics Ltd., Mumbai.

Ceramic Crucibles for Carbon and Sulphur Analyzer

The technology transfer agreement for production of ceramic crucibles has been effected in favour of M/s. Advanced Ceramics, Hyderabad with home-grown Technology programme of TIFAC providing the soft loan to the entrepreneur. The technology transfer will be carried out in phases.

Magnesium Aluminate Spinel Grains

The technology transfer agreement has been effected between ARCI, M/s. MPR Refractories Ltd., Hyderabad and M/s. MPR Agglomerates Ltd., Hyderabad. Provisional specification has also been filed for the invention.

Ceramic Honeycomb based Air Heater

The technology transfer agreement for producing energy efficient air heaters, which can save upto 50% of electrical energy when compared to conventional air heaters, has been effected in favour of M/s. Aerotherm Ltd., Secunderabad.

Exfoliated Graphite and its Value Added Products

MoU has been signed with M/s. Pasumpon Graphite Pvt. Ltd.; Chennai for setting up of production facility for exfoliated graphite and its value added products. The technology has been established in collaboration with Gas Institute and Zavalye Graphite Plant, Ukraine

Ceramic Honeycomb for Catalytic Converters

The technology transfer agreement has been signed between ARCI and M/s. Nimra Cerglass Technics Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad.

Detonation Spray Coating (DSC) Technology

Two DSC units have been fabricated indigenously under the supervision of experts from Institute of Problems in Material Sciences, Kiev. Four MoUs have been entered into for transfer of technology. The technology is being transferred region wise. The technology transfer agreement has been effected between ARCI and M/s. Shafel Tech, Chennai for the Southern region. Home Grown Technology Programme of TIFAC will be providing the soft loan component.

Electro Spray Coating (ESC) Technology

Five MoUs have been signed for transfer of coating technology established by ARCI and Experimental Plant, Moldova along with the appropriate unit.

Production of PM Grade Iron Powder

The technology for production of PM grade iron powder at 300kg/day output level has been established in collaboration with Gas Institute, Kiev. Suitable technology receiver is being identified.

Production of Powders and Whiskers using SHS Technology

The technology for production of Si3N4, Si3N4-TiN whiskers and powders TiNx powders and ZrNx powders has been established and technology transfer agreement is in finalization stage.

Reaction Bonded Silicon Carbide Seals (RBSC) and Wear Parts

An MoU has been signed with CUMI, Chennai for the development of RBSC seals and wear parts for commercial application.

Micro Arc Oxidation (MAO) Coating

The potential of MAO coating has been demonstrated to the industry and efforts are on to invite response from the industry for the technology.

Boronizing of Steel

An MoU has been entered into between ARCI and M/s. Raj Enterprises, who shall act as marketing consultant for the Centre. Technology transfer will be carried out after market assessment and sensitization.

Alumina Tiles and Components for Wear Resistance Applications

MoU for technology development has been signed between ARCI and M/s. Hoffman Engineering and Marketing Pvt. Ltd., Ahmedabad.

Diamond-Like Carbon Coating (DLC)

Laboratory model DLC unit has been designed, fabricated, installed and commissioned in collaboration with Institute of Physical Chemistry, Moscow. Process parameters for DLC coating on aluminium substrates optimized.

Sintered Silicon Carbide (SSC) Seals and Wear Parts

SSC seals and wear parts of various sizes have been made and supplied to few companies for field trials and performance evaluation.

Ceramic Honeycomb for Molten Metal Filtration

Agreement has been signed with M/s. Quality Technologies Pvt. Ltd.; Hyderabad for developing ceramic honeycomb based molten metal filters.

MoSi2 Powder for Heating Element Application

The technology route for producing MoSi2 powder has been established and efforts are on to export the powder to a major MoSi2 heating element manufacturer in USA.
