DST promotes better science teaching in multiple ways

Teachers have a crucial role in any society which is irreplaceable as they can shape the future by the impact they have on their students. Aware of the role teachers play in creation of human resources in science, DST is committed to improve the quality of science teaching in the country by exposing teachers at different levels to the best science facilities in the country and by encouraging innovative methods of teaching.

Teachers Associateship for Research Excellence (TARE): Exposure to research

Teachers Associateship for Research Excellence (TARE) helps research enthusiastic faculty from State Universities and Colleges and private academic Institutions to gain such exposure in national institutions & central universities. This research exposure helps improve the quality of the teaching staff and their pedagogic abilities.

The scheme provides research fellowship of Rs. 60,000 per year (in addition to the researcher’s own salary) which is provided subject to completion of minimum 90 days research work per year in the host institution. A research grant of Rs. 5 lakhs per annum (50% each to host and parent institution) is also provided.

This scheme aims to facilitate mobility of faculty members working in a regular capacity in State Universities and Colleges and in private Academic Institutions to carryout research work in an established public funded institution such as IITs, IISc, IISERS, National Institutions (NITs, CSIR, ICAR, ICMR labs and other central institutions) and Central Universities, located preferably nearer to the institution where the faculty member is working. Research work will be carried out in a manner to ensure that the researcher continues to work in the host institute as well as the parent institution on mutually agreed terms between the researcher and mentor.

Indian citizens residing in India with PhD degree or masters in engineering and technology can apply for the scheme. They must also hold a regular academic or research position in State Universities, colleges or private Academic Institutions and should not hold any ongoing research projects or any fellowship at the time of submission of application.

Teachers Science Congress: Platform for discussing new teaching methods

The National Teachers Science Congress provides platform to science & mathematics teachers to communicate their ideas, share new experiments in teaching science and enhance their level of scientific awareness. It helps the teachers to exchange knowledge and share expertise and experience in new science teaching methodologies. The teachers go back with minds recharged with new ideas which they can implement among the students. Solutions to challenges in many new teaching methods are also brought about.

DST through various schemes supports rejuvenation of scientific knowledge among teachers from remote locations by placing them in centers of excellence during vacations

DST supports teachers from remote colleges by placing them in centers of excellence, renowned facilities or centers to update their knowledge during summer and winter vacations for two months. The two-month period provides exposure to the teachers to the best of equipment, to new ways of doing science and to new ideas. Such exposure can go a long way to improve the quality of teaching in remote corners of the country.
