LOK SABHA ISRO has developed Automatic Weather
Stations (AWS), capable of collecting in-situ weather data such as pressure, temperature,
humidity, wind and rainfall on an hourly basis, and transmitting the same to a
Central Station through INSAT communication satellites. 360 Automatic Weather
Stations have been set up so far covering monsoon regions of South India and disaster-prone
regions of North East.
This information was given by the Minister of State
in the Prime Ministers Office, Shri Prithviraj Chavan, in the Lok Sabha
today. The Minister also informed that the Indo-Australian Workshop on remote
sensing was held at Banglore in December 2007 under the aegis of Indian National
Academy of Engineering (INAE) and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences
and Engineering (AATSE). The workshop recommended joint working between scientists
of the two countries in areas including calibration and validation activities;
data assimilation in numerical weather prediction models; and hyperspectral data
processing and analysis.
