Releases LOK SABHA A National Biotechnology
Department Strategy having been approved by the Government of India, action has
been taken for implementation of some major decisions such as Establishment of
an independent National Biotechnology Regulatory Authority, Increased Public Private
Partnership programmes, improved quality of Human Resource, creation of Centers
of Excellence and other infrastructural facilities, new legislation for protection
of IP in public funded R&D.
A number of major new initiatives have
been launched- Under the Public Private Partnership-SBIRI Scheme a total of 35
projects have been supported so far and 8 Centers of Excellence projects have
been supported across the country.
(i) Two new centers-Centre for translational
research in health science and technology and UNESCO regional centre for science,
education and innovation have been approved.
(ii) Special human resource
initiative for quality improvement have been taken, such as setting up of Star
colleges, teachers training programmes, etc.
This information
was given by Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Shri
Kapil Sibal in a written reply to a question by Shri Sugrib Singh in the Lok Sabha
today.
