  • Centres of Excellence in Nano Technology

    The Union Government has developed 20 Centres of Excellence in Nanotechnology in various States of country. In addition, 12 Units on Nano Science and 8 Centres of Nano technology were also funded earlier. The details of these Centres of Excellence, budgetary allocation made during last three years and in the current year, and also their areas of excellence institution-wise are given in the Annexure (attached below).

    The Government has been supporting such Centres of Excellence in Indian institutions. A budget of about Rs. 100 crore is earmarked this year to provide research grants to a large number of institutes in the country, which also include the Institute of Nano Science and Technology- Mohali (INST-Mohali), Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences- Bengaluru (CeNS) for implementing research and technology development projects, thematic centres of excellence and organization of national and international conferences/workshops to give impetus to nano science and...

  • Curtain Raiser for the Stakeholder Meet on National Certification System for Tissue Culture Raised Plants (NCS-TCP)

    The Ministry of Science & Technology, through its Department of Biotechnology (DBT), is organizing a Meet of the stakeholders of the National Certification System for Tissue Culture Raised Plants (NCS-TCP) on July 04, 2016 in New Delhi. It is aimed to create awareness among them, particularly the key officials from Centre and State Government’s Agriculture and Horticulture Departments, on the subject. The Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL) is assisting DBT in implementing the NCS-TCP as the Management Cell and organizing the event.

    The purpose of the stakeholder meet is to organize an interaction amongst the stakeholders namely Tissue Culture Industries, Farmers, Mission Directors of State Horticulture Missions and senior officials of Horticulture Department in the States dealing with tissue culture plants and other quality planting material.   • ‘The Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR), Dhanbad has taken a giant step for ensuring the quality of coal for power generation’, says Dr. Harsh Vardhan.

    CSIR-CIMFR, a constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), entered into an MoU with Coal Supplying Companies and Power Utilities today for the quality analysis of coal being supplied to power utilities by the coal supplying companies. This collaboration will enhance efficiency of use of coal by the power sector.   • ‘The Government stands solidly behind the Grassroots Innovators’, says Dr. Harsh Vardhan during his visit to National Innovation Foundation (NIF)-India

    Union Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, visited National Innovation Foundation-India (NIF), Ahmedabad, on 26th June, 2016. He interacted with the staff members and witnessed an exhibition on grassroots innovation.

    While addressing the press, Dr. Harsh Vardhan underlined the extraordinary commitment the present government has made to ensure that no worthy innovative idea remains unsupported. National Innovation Foundation is taking this determination of the government forward by providing hand holding support to grassroots innovators and tens of thousands of school children.

    The Minister particularly appreciated the extremely affordable solutions being developed by the NIF based on the ideas of knowledge-rich, economically-poor people.   • India and UK join hands to work as R&D partners in Solar Alliance and Nano Material Research

    Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan led the Indian delegation at the 5th Indo-UK Science and Innovation Council Meeting (SIC) held at London earlier last week, co-chaired by Mr. Jo Johnson, Minister of State for Universities and Science, UK. After the event, Dr. Harsh Vardhan stated that India and UK have agreed to work together in two major initiatives in the fields of Solar Energy and Nano Material Research, inter alia.

     

    The SIC is the apex body which oversees the entire gamut of the India-UK science, technology and innovation cooperation and meets once in two years. The last meeting of the SIC was held in New Delhi in November 2014 during which both countries had launched the Newton-Bhabha Programme to support the bilateral Science & Technology cooperation.   • India and UK have agreed to work as R&D partners in Solar Alliance and Nano Material Research

    Following the 5th Indo-UK Science and Innovation Council Meeting (SIC) held at London on 15th June 2016, Dr. Harsh Vardhan Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Government of India informed that India and UK have agreed to work together in two major initiatives:

    • As a part of commitment to the solar alliance, establish India-UK Networked Centre on Solar Energy linked to India’s renewable energy mission and UK’s Supergens Program. The research projects will focus on systems level design and development covering Solar energy generation, Storage systems and Grid integration particularly for micro-grid systems. India would be investing Rs 50 crores over  a period of five years with matching contribution from Research Council UK under Newton Bhabha program.
