SHRI is a distinct vertical of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, established in August 2022 to function in the interdisciplinary sphere of traditional knowledge system. The aim of SHRI Cell is to protect, preserve and present Indian Heritage on a global platform using an evidence-based, data-driven approach and modern tools of Science and Technology (S&T).
Objectives
- To promote research activities to understand the evolution & development of human civilization.
- To explore new methods, state-of-the-art technology to preserve and conserve heritage objects, monuments, artwork and practices.
- Documentation and scientific validation of Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS) of communities as an integral part of cultural heritage.
- Capacity building of human resources & encouraging new researchers to work in this area.

Indian Heritage in Digital Space Research (IHDS)
The India Heritage in Digital Space (IHDS) program extends the power of digital tools and technologies beyond monuments to art, architecture, and all forms of cultural and historical experience. Use of emerging technologies, viz. AR, VR, XR, computer vision, graphics, audio-video technologies, user interface design, etc., offers the prospect of creating distinct and impactful experiences for stakeholders.
Scientific Utilization through Research Augmentation-Prime Products from Indigenous Cows: SUTRA-PIC India Program (SUTRA-PIC)
SUTRA-PIC aims to validate and improve upon existing knowledge systems, particularly those related to indigenous cows, their products (like milk, dung, and urine), and their utilization in various areas like medicine, agriculture, and food.

Millet Program
Millet Program was initiated during the ‘International Year of Millets-2023’ to support novel tools and techniques for net-zero primary and secondary processing, enhance protein extraction, improve functionality and nutrient bioavailability and create functional products/supplements, etc. to establish India as a global leader in millet-based products in the plant-based food sector.
