Experts emphasised the need for R&D, robust supply chain and adaptation of international best practices during stakeholder consultation workshop on ‘Advancing Energy-Efficient Ceiling Fans in India, organised by Department of Science and Technology (DST), in association with The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).
Dr. Anita Gupta, Head, Climate, Energy and Sustainable Technology (CEST) division, DST, highlighted the need for improving energy efficiency in ceiling fans while ensuring affordability, out of the box innovation and futuristic R&D for achieving India’s ambitious decarbonization goal by 2070.
Dr. Gupta also urged the manufacturing sector of cooling technologies to align with Hon’ble PM’s 2047 targets of "Viksit Bharat" and Panchamrit goals in tackling the climate change by partnering with DST in accelerating research, development and innovation.
The India ceiling fan market size reached 42.2 million Units in 2023 and is expected to reach 50.9 million Units by 2032, exhibiting a growth rate (CAGR) of 2.11% during 2024-2032. The India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) projects that India's ceiling fan stock will grow from 500 million to 1 billion by 2038, underscoring the need for energy-efficient cooling solutions. ICAP is an important element under National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) with a mission focused on Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) administered by BEE.
In this context, the aim of this workshop was to develop a roadmap for affordable, indigenous, high-efficiency ceiling fans, supporting India’s decarbonization efforts and clean energy goals.
NRDC presented an overview on India’s ceiling fan market while Dr. Pravatanalini Samal, Director, BEE highlighted various Govt. initiatives towards energy efficiency and rating procedures.
The industry stakeholders shared their perspectives on durability issues, market demand, consumer expectations and gap areas for R&D.
The event convened over 40 key stakeholders including leading ceiling fan manufacturers, industry associations, R&D institutions, policy agencies, funding agencies and government departments. Representative from leading fan industries like Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Ltd., V-Guard Industries Ltd., Bajaj Electricals Ltd., Khaitan India Ltd., Versa Drives Private Ltd. etc. distribution companies like BSES Yamuna Power Ltd., industry associations like Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE), Shakti Foundation, International Copper Alliance, international organizations like World Bank, line ministries like Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) attended the workshop.
