BRIEF OF SREE CHITRA TIRUNAL INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM.

Established by the Government of Kerala, as an advanced centre for medical specialties, the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum was elevated to the status of an Institute of National importance under DST, Government of India, by an Act of Parliament in the year 1980. The institute was mandated with the primary objective of research and development in biomedical technology and development of postgraduate training programs in advanced medical specialties.

 

This uniquely poised Institute serves as tertiary referral center and has a dedicated team of clinicians, scientists and engineers devoted to high quality biomedical research and developing technologies in health care with emphasis on cardiovascular and neurological diseases.

The Biomedical Technology Wing has been instrumental in establishing a medical device industry base in India by successfully developing and commercializing technologies of a number of devices and implants.  Some of the commercialized technologies include blood bag, membrane oxygenator, hydrocephalus shunt, artificial heart valve, dental materials, hydroxyapatite based materials, drug releasing intrauterine device and implants. The Biomedical Technology wing also has implemented a quality system meeting international standard ISO/IEC 17025 and is accredited by Le Comite Francais d'Acreditation (COFRAC), France.

Equipped with highly qualified personnel including doctors, nurses and other para-medical staff, and state-of-the-art facilities the hospital has emerged as an advanced centre for diagnosis and treatment. The R. Madhavan Nayar Center for Comprehensive Epilepsy Care (RMNC) is the largest center in India and South Asia catering to the diagnosis, treatment, awareness and overall welfare of people with epilepsy.

A Comprehensive Care Centre for Movement Disorders was established in 1998 with the aim of providing the most advanced forms of medical and surgical treatment and ancillary services to patients afflicted with various movement disorders. The Department of Cardiology offers its expertise in risk stratification, prevention and comprehensive management as well as facilitates rehabilitation of patients with a wide range of coronary and non-coronary cardiac ailments.

Adding a new dimension, the Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies (AMCHSS) was dedicated to the nation in the year 2000, with focus on public health issues through research, training and intervention. This Centre is recognized as a centre of excellence for public health training by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The centre focuses on research in the areas of non-communicable diseases, gender and health, health policy and management.
