Senior scientists deliberated on various aspects of the Himalaya, its resources, hazards, and its importance in lectures organised on the occasion of the annual celebrations of ‘Himalaya Diwas’.
Dr. Kalachand Sain, Director WIHG, explained that Himalaya is a mega store of various resources, and it is our responsibility to extract these resources without harming the Himalaya. He also highlighted various Geo-hazard issues that exist in the Himalaya like earthquakes, cloud bursts, glacier melting, black carbon, and proposed solutions to mitigate these hazards, at a lecture to celebrate the Himalaya Diwas organised by Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), an autonomous institute of the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India on 9th September 2021.
Senior Scientist Dr. Vikram Gupta described the various causes of landslides in the Himalayan region. He said that study of risk assessment of any region could be of immense help in mitigating the damage and emphasized on non-structural mitigation plans for the Himalayan region.
Dr S. K. Rai, another senior scientist from the institute, elucidated how the river system affected the slopes of the Himalayan region and were responsible for erosion. “Erosion plays a significant role in sediment supply to the Gangetic plains of India, which are vital for agriculture point of view,” he said.
Senior Scientists like Dr. R. K. Sehgal and Dr. Ajay Paul also participated in the discussions.
