Participants from across the country participate in World Environment Day celebrations held at WIHG

 

Participants from across the country participated in the online lecture on environment organized by the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) to mark the celebrations of World Environment Day (5th June).

Professor Arun Deep Ahluwalia former head of Panjab University’s Department of Geology, an expert in the fields of geoscience and environmental science was the speaker of the talk. He talked on the topic of “Earth and environment sciences outreach for sustainable nation-building and global peace” and he dedicated his talk to the Late Professor Dr S B Bhatia, FNA and Veteran Padma Vibhushan awardee late Sh. Sunder Lal Bahuguna.

In his talk he said that outreach programs should be conducted regarding the environment awareness at local level i.e. school level, panchayat level, small town level. He said that we have to explain technical terms of environment in very simple and local language to the general public. He stressed on encouraging the children about the environment through the movies based on the environment issues and combining the geology and environmental sciences for the beneficiary of the environment.

“A country, which does not give the weightage to the environment cannot become developed .In each village, town there should be geological and environment museum to motivated the general people at local level. It is the time to take care of environment otherwise in future, we have to buy oxygen through air cans,each day should be the environment day and individually each has to make the resolution regarding the conservation of the environment”, he added as remembered the famous song ‘एकला चलो रे….., एकला चलो रे’ for emphasis the role of each individual for the conservation of the environment.

This talk was coordinated by the Dr. R. K. Sehgal, senior scientist, WIHG under the guidance of Dr. Kalachand Sain, Director, WIHG. On this environment day’s occasion director, WIHG said that each individual has to make a resolution that whatever we took from nature, we have to pay back that to nature through environmental conservation.
